Watermelon grows best in warm, sunny spots with well-draining soil. Plant seeds after the last frost when the soil is warm, spacing them about 3 feet apart to allow room for spreading vines. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during flowering and fruiting. Mulching helps retain moisture and control weeds. Watermelons are ready to harvest when the rind loses its shine and the underside turns yellow.
